Hiking Wear Fabrics for Unpredictable Weather Situations

Keep your body warm in cold temperatures and fresh and dry in hot conditions. When cold, choose lightweight down jackets with elastic down-proof fabrics or wind-proof materials.
Both incorporate thermal retention materials into yarns to keep the body warm.
On the other hand, when hot, the Sun Shield Cool Series can help reflect near-infrared rays from the sun and keep people comfortable during hiking and trekking activities.

Learn More about Hiking Wear Fabric

Why can’t I wear normal clothes for mountain climbing?

The first key point of mountaineering clothing is to retain body heat because once clothes gets wet, your body temperature will easily begin to drop. Therefore, the more challenging the journey is, the more specialized equipment is required. The clothes can be divided into three categories from the inside to the outside: the inner layer is the moisture wicking layer, the middle layer is the thermal layer, and the outer layer is the waterproof layer, and each layer of clothing material has different functions of drying, warmth, and protection. In the process of walking, people should put on or take off a layer according to the weather or physical condition.

Why do we need water repellent when we already have waterproof?

One may feel confused, why do we need water-repellent fabric since the cloth is already waterproof and moisture permeable? Indeed, waterproofing is a feature not interacting with water-repellency; however, the breathability may be greatly affected by water-repellency.

Generally, moisture permeability is attained by dint of reducing the humidity in the garment system through facilitating the permeation process of moisture generated by the body through a membrane or coating to the external environment. However, a solid water film formed on the surface of a non-water-repellent fabric wet by water on rainy days will impede the ventilation and result in accumulation of moisture in the garment system, which not only makes the user covered in sweat but leads to ice pellets formed in the garment system and in turn hypothermia. Most of raindrops will roll off the surface of water-repellent cloth and make it harder to form a water film. That is why choosing quality waterproof and moisture permeable cloth featuring water-repellent fabric is the best way to enjoy and immerse yourself in natural.

Can ski jackets be used for mountaineering?

Yes, they can. Ski and mountaineering jackets are very similar. They can provide you with warmth and protection from the cold. Ski jackets are usually designed to prevent snow from getting near the body when falling, so they will have a bunched design. Therefore it is an excellent choice to use ski jackets when mountaineering. However, it would be best if you did not use a ski jacket as the only mountaineering gear. Depending on the temperature and situation, a different apparel fabric with another function should also be chosen.
